About Shoreline Scholars

A different kind of tutoring company, built by a student.

Shoreline Scholars exists because its founder spent years doing school without enjoying it — and then discovered what learning feels like when understanding finally clicks. This page is our mission, our story, and the credentials behind the work.

Our mission

Discover the Joy of Learning.

We believe understanding is more valuable than memorization, curiosity is more powerful than obligation, and the ability to think independently is one of the most important skills a student can develop.

Academic pressure sometimes causes students to lose sight of what makes learning meaningful. Our work is to restore that sense of discovery.

Why Shoreline Scholars exists

The North Shore is full of families who invest seriously in their children’s education. Much of what is available, though, is built around finishing homework and lifting a grade. Shoreline Scholars was created for the student who needs something different: instruction that explains the reasoning, welcomes questions, and treats a wrong answer as the beginning of understanding rather than a failure.

Our founder experienced both kinds of education. That contrast is the reason this company exists, and it shapes how every session is run.

Where we are going

Shoreline Scholars begins small and personal, with the founder teaching the subjects he knows well. Growth will come deliberately, through tutors who are evaluated for both subject knowledge and the ability to explain ideas clearly.

  • A network of carefully evaluated tutors who share the same educational philosophy
  • Additional subjects, advanced coursework, and standardized test preparation
  • Small-group programs, summer enrichment, and educational workshops
  • Partnerships with local schools and community organizations

Growth will never come at the expense of the philosophy. Even as the organization expands, Shoreline Scholars stays committed to making learning enjoyable and helping students discover their own academic potential.

Founder & Tutor

St. John’s Preparatory School, Danvers, Massachusetts. Honors and Advanced Placement coursework across mathematics, science, and history.

“I don’t believe academic success should be the only measure of a student’s abilities. I do believe every student deserves confidence in their ability to learn.”

My name is Finn McKay, and I founded Shoreline Scholars with a simple idea: learning should be about more than grades.

I attend St. John’s Preparatory School in Danvers, Massachusetts, where I have built a rigorous course load of honors and Advanced Placement classes. But my relationship with education has not always been what it is today.

Throughout middle school and my freshman year, I was much like any other student. I completed assignments, studied for examinations, and worked toward good grades. I understood that school mattered, but I didn’t particularly enjoy the process of learning. Academic work was something to finish rather than something to explore.

That began to change during my sophomore year. I developed a genuine interest in understanding how things work — in exploring ideas beyond what an assignment required. I found satisfaction in solving difficult problems, building arguments, and noticing connections between subjects that had seemed unrelated.

Some of the most rewarding moments in education happen when you finally understand something that initially seemed impossible.

That realization changed how I approached school. It also made me look back at my earlier years and recognize how much I would have benefited from an environment that encouraged curiosity rather than focusing so heavily on grades and performance.

That is why I created Shoreline Scholars. I want to help younger students discover the enjoyment of learning earlier than I did — to recognize that they are capable of understanding difficult concepts, asking meaningful questions, and developing their own approach to solving problems.

I don’t believe every student needs to love every subject. I do believe every student deserves the opportunity to develop confidence in their ability to learn. My goal isn’t simply to help students get better grades — it’s to help them discover what they’re capable of when they genuinely enjoy learning.
